Digital marketing in Nepal means getting found and chosen online by people who mostly live on a phone, search on Google, scroll Facebook and pay with a wallet or a QR code. I'm Shashikant Shah, a digital marketing expert in Kathmandu.

I've spent 5+ years and 60+ projects building this for clients in eight countries, Nepal first, and I build the websites and tracking myself. What works here is narrower than the global advice suggests. Google search and Maps bring the buyers. Facebook and Instagram bring the attention. WhatsApp and Viber close the sale. Email mostly doesn't.

Short answer: Fix your website and tracking, claim your Google Business Profile, then fund one channel properly. For most businesses that's Google search for buyers who already know what they want, and Meta ads for everyone else. Reply on WhatsApp within minutes. Judge it on enquiries and sales, never on likes.

What digital marketing in Nepal actually means

The textbook definition is any marketing that runs through the internet. True and useless. In Nepal the useful definition is smaller: the five or six places a buyer looks before they call you, and what you do in each.

Here's how a purchase usually happens. Someone in Lalitpur wants a dentist, a laptop repair or a hotel in Pokhara. They search Google or open Maps, check the reviews and photos, then look for the business on Facebook to see whether it's real. Then they message on WhatsApp to ask the price.

If you're missing from any of those steps, the buyer takes the next name on the list. Digital marketing in Nepal is the work of being present, and convincing, at each one.

The channels that matter in Nepal in 2026

I'll take them in the order I'd fund them, with the honest limit of each.

Google search and Maps

This is where intent lives. Someone typing "SEO company Kathmandu" or "hotel in Pokhara price" is close to buying. Google holds almost all of Nepal's search traffic, so SEO here means Google.

For a business with a physical address, Google Business Profile is the highest return job on this list, and it's free. Claim it, pick the right primary category, add real photos and ask every happy customer for a review.

Below the map pack the usual SEO work applies: a fast site, pages that answer what buyers ask, and content written the way Nepalis search, in English, Devanagari and Romanised Nepali. How I do this is on my SEO expert in Nepal page. Google Ads buys the same intent today instead of in six months. How I run it is on my Google Ads expert in Nepal page.

Facebook and Instagram

Facebook isn't one social channel among many in Nepal. It's the channel. It reaches about half the country and sends almost all social referral traffic to websites. If you sell to consumers, Meta ads are the paid entry point, and your page is where a buyer checks that you're real.

Instagram is different. Lots of people use it, hardly anyone clicks out of it. Treat it as the place you're seen, then convert on Facebook, search or WhatsApp.

The mistake I see most is boosting posts from the page. Boosting gives you no objective, no exclusions and no proper tracking. The same money in Ads Manager with a Leads or Sales objective and the Conversions API is a different business. That's the core of my Meta ads expert in Nepal work.

TikTok

TikTok is big in Nepal, especially under 30 and outside the Valley, and it stayed up during the September 2025 block when Facebook and Instagram went dark.

In my experience it's a reach and brand channel first. Restaurants, fashion and anything with a face in front of the camera do well. B2B and high ticket services mostly don't.

YouTube

YouTube is where Nepalis go to learn and compare, on a phone, often in Nepali. It suits anything that needs a demonstration: a product, a course, a treatment, a trek. One honest video that shows the thing beats ten polished ads. It's slow and cumulative, and worth it if you'll keep going for a year.

WhatsApp and Viber

In Nepal the sale closes in a chat. Buyers want to confirm the price, the delivery area and that a real person answers before they pay. WhatsApp is the default in the cities and with the diaspora. Viber is still strong with older buyers.

Put a click to chat button on every page and every ad. Then answer fast. A lead that waits until tomorrow is usually gone.

Email, and why it's weak here

Email works in the UK and the USA. In Nepal most buyers don't open their inbox unless they work in an office. Collect email anyway, because it's a contact you own if a platform goes down, but don't expect it to sell. SMS and a WhatsApp broadcast list do that job better.

AI search

More buyers now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews before they open a list of results. Being the business those answers name is a new job, and I do it as GEO. It's mostly good SEO: plain answers under clear headings, consistent business details everywhere, and not blocking AI crawlers.

The types of digital marketing, and which ones work in Nepal

Most guides list seven types of digital marketing. Here is each one with the Nepal verdict, so you can stop reading about the ones that will not pay here.

TypeWhat it isIn Nepal
Search engine optimisation (SEO)Earning Google and Maps visibility for what buyers searchWorks. Google holds 96% of search here, and the map pack decides local purchases.
Paid search (Google Ads)Buying the same searches today instead of in six monthsWorks for services, education and anything with clear intent. Needs dollar billing and real tracking.
Social media marketingOrganic and paid presence on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTubeFacebook is the channel. Instagram shows, TikTok reaches, YouTube teaches. Boosting posts is not a strategy.
Content marketingPages and videos that answer what buyers ask before they callWorks, and almost nobody does it well in Nepali or Romanised Nepali. The gap is yours.
Email marketingNewsletters and automated sequencesWeak. Office workers read email; most buyers do not. Collect addresses, sell on WhatsApp.
Influencer and affiliate marketingPaying creators or partners for reach or salesGrowing on TikTok and Instagram for consumer brands. Measure it with a code or a link, not a screenshot.
Mobile and messaging (SMS, WhatsApp, Viber)Reaching buyers in the apps they already openThis is where Nepali sales close. Put click to chat on everything and answer fast.

If you only fund three: Google, Facebook and messaging. Add content once the first three bring enquiries you can track.

How to do digital marketing in Nepal yourself

You can run the first version without an agency. Here is the order that works, each step free or close to it.

  1. Make the site load fast on a phone. Test it on a mid range Android over mobile data, not on your office wifi. Compress images, remove plugins you do not use, and put the phone number and WhatsApp button at the top.
  2. Install tracking before you spend. Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, the Meta Pixel, and call and chat tracking. Define one conversion, usually a call, a WhatsApp message or a form, and make every platform optimise toward it.
  3. Claim and complete Google Business Profile. Right primary category, every service listed, real photos, hours, and a review request to every finished customer.
  4. Write the pages buyers need before they call. Price ranges, what is included, how long it takes, where you serve. In English and in the Nepali your customers type.
  5. Fund one channel. Google Ads if people already search for your offer, Meta ads if they do not know it exists yet. One campaign, one offer, one landing page.
  6. Answer within minutes. A lead that waits a day has messaged three other shops.
  7. Read the numbers monthly and move the money. Enquiries and sales per rupee, never likes.

When this stops being enough, that is the moment to hire help, and you will know exactly what to ask for.

The scope of digital marketing in Nepal: demand, careers and what to learn

Demand is real and still growing. More than half of Nepal is online, wallets and QR payments have made buying online normal, and most businesses still run on boosted posts and no tracking, so the gap between average and good is wide. That gap is why skilled people get hired and why small businesses with good execution beat bigger ones.

If you want to work in it rather than buy it, learn the things employers cannot teach from a course: Google Ads and Search Console in real accounts, how to read Analytics, how to write a page that answers a search, and how to report enquiries rather than reach. Salaries vary too widely by city and employer for me to publish a number, and anyone who gives you one without a source made it up.

What digital marketing costs in Nepal

I compared what eight Nepali providers publish in my guide to the cost of digital marketing in Nepal. Agency fees for a real multi channel programme cluster around NPR 30,000 to 80,000 a month. Ad spend to Google or Meta is always on top of that, it's billed in US dollars, and 13% VAT is added to the fee by any registered provider. Almost no quote says so.

My own prices are published. An audit with a 30 day action plan is USD 249, about NPR 34,000. A four week sprint is USD 899, about NPR 122,000. Ongoing work is USD 1,800 a month, about NPR 245,000. What each one leaves out is on the pricing page. The first thirty minute call is free.

The retainer looks high next to the Nepali agency band, so I'll say why. I work in your own accounts, I build the site and the tracking myself instead of passing it to a junior, and you see what changed each month. If you only need a Facebook page posted to, I'm not the right person and I'll say so.

Whoever you hire, ask one question of every quote: does this number include the money that goes to the platforms? Then read how to choose a digital marketing expert in Nepal before you sign.

The numbers behind all this

I keep a sourced page of digital marketing statistics for Nepal. These five change how I spend, with where each one comes from.

  • 16.6 million internet users, 56.0% of Nepal's 29.6 million people, up only 0.3% in a year. DataReportal, Digital 2026: Nepal, describing October 2025. Your ceiling is set.
  • Facebook reaches 14.8 million people, half the population, and sends 88.69% of social referral traffic to websites. DataReportal, October 2025, and StatCounter, August 2026. That's why Facebook is the channel, not a channel.
  • Google holds 96.33% of search in Nepal. StatCounter, August 2026. SEO in Nepal means Google.
  • 57.13% of web traffic is mobile, 42.42% desktop. StatCounter, August 2026. Build for the phone first, but your pricing page is read on a laptop more often than you'd think.
  • Digital wallet users grew from 6.3 million to 28.3 million, and QR payments reached 59.3 million transactions a month by mid May 2026. Nepal Rastra Bank data, as reported by People's Review, June 2026. Cash on delivery only is now a choice, not a constraint.

Two limits. DataReportal doesn't publish TikTok or YouTube reach for Nepal, so I don't quote one. And no independent body publishes a total ad spend for the country, so anyone who gives you that number made it up.

How to start in 90 days

Days 1 to 30. Fix what every channel depends on. Make the site fast on a mid range Android over mobile data. Install GA4, Tag Manager, the Meta Pixel and call and chat tracking, and define one conversion that every platform optimises toward. Claim and complete the Google Business Profile. Put WhatsApp on every page. None of this needs ad money.

Days 31 to 60. Fund one channel properly. If people already search for what you sell, that's Google: exact and phrase match, a negative keyword list, a landing page per campaign. If they don't, it's Meta: a Leads or Sales objective, the Conversions API switched on, three to five creatives in the language your buyers use. Start asking every finished customer for a review.

Days 61 to 90. Read the numbers and move the money. Build retargeting from the visitors and video viewers you now have. Publish the first pages that answer what buyers ask before they call, in English and in Nepali. Send the sales that closed on the phone back into the ad platforms. Then decide where month four's budget goes.

You get all of this as a written plan before I start, with what's not included. The case studies show what it looked like for others, as account totals, including work done as part of an agency team.

The mistakes I see most in Nepal

  1. Boosting posts instead of running campaigns. Cheap likes, no enquiries, no learning.
  2. Sending ads to a slow homepage. You pay for the click and lose the visitor before the page loads.
  3. No tracking. Nobody knows what worked, so every decision becomes an opinion.
  4. Ignoring Google Business Profile while paying to reach the same neighbours with ads.
  5. Machine translated Nepali that no Nepali speaker would write or search for.
  6. Replying to leads the next day. The buyer has already messaged three other shops.
  7. Spreading NPR 30,000 across four channels. One channel funded properly beats four funded badly.
  8. Letting the agency own your ad accounts. Leaving then means starting from zero.

If you want a second opinion, send me your category, your city and what you spent last quarter. I'll tell you the first thing I'd fix, whether or not you hire me. How I work is on my digital marketing expert in Nepal page.

Frequently asked questions

What business owners in Nepal ask me most often about digital marketing here.

What is digital marketing in Nepal?

It's the work of being found and chosen online by buyers in Nepal, who mostly search on Google, check you on Facebook, ask questions on WhatsApp or Viber, and pay by wallet or QR code. In practice: a fast website, a complete Google Business Profile, SEO, Meta ads, Google Ads and fast replies in chat.

Which channel should a business in Nepal start with?

Google first, then Facebook, for most businesses. Search and Maps catch people who already want what you sell. Facebook and Instagram reach about half the country and create demand. TikTok and YouTube add reach, WhatsApp closes the sale, and email is weak here. Fund one channel properly before adding another.

How much does digital marketing cost in Nepal?

Published Nepali agency guides cluster around NPR 30,000 to 80,000 a month in fees for a multi channel programme, with ad spend to Google or Meta on top. My own prices are an audit at USD 249, about NPR 34,000, a four week sprint at USD 899, about NPR 122,000, and ongoing work at USD 1,800 a month, about NPR 245,000.

How long does digital marketing take to show results in Nepal?

Paid ads can bring enquiries within days once tracking works, though the first few weeks are learning. Google Business Profile changes often move within one to two months. SEO usually needs six months or more in a competitive category. I don't guarantee rankings.

Is TikTok worth it for a business in Nepal?

For restaurants, fashion, consumer brands and anything you can show on camera, yes, as a reach and brand channel. For B2B and high ticket services, rarely. I don't quote a TikTok user figure for Nepal because DataReportal doesn't publish one. Check reach for your own audience inside TikTok's ads manager first.

Should I hire an agency or a freelancer in Nepal?

Hire whoever will work in your own accounts, separate fee from ad spend in writing, include tracking, and report on enquiries rather than reach. An agency suits multi channel work with one accountable party. A freelancer suits one channel on a tight budget. If you only need posts designed, I'm not the right person and I'll say so.

How do I do digital marketing in Nepal?

Fix the site speed and install tracking, claim Google Business Profile, write the pages buyers need before they call, fund one channel (Google Ads for existing demand, Meta ads for new demand), put WhatsApp on everything and answer within minutes. Judge it on enquiries and sales. The step by step order is in the section above.

What are the 7 types of digital marketing?

SEO, paid search, social media marketing, content marketing, email marketing, influencer and affiliate marketing, and mobile or messaging marketing. In Nepal the ones that pay are SEO and Maps, Google Ads, Facebook, content, and messaging on WhatsApp and Viber. Email is weak here and influencer work only suits consumer brands.

How do I start digital marketing for a small business in Nepal?

Start free: a fast website with a WhatsApp button, a complete Google Business Profile, and reviews from every customer. Then spend on one channel only, NPR 15,000 to 30,000 a month for a test, with tracking that counts calls and messages. Add a second channel when the first brings enquiries you can count.

Is digital marketing in demand in Nepal?

Yes. More than half the population is online, digital payments are now normal, and most businesses still have no tracking and no search presence, so businesses that execute well win quickly and people who can run real accounts get hired. The demand is for measurable work, not for posting.

Should my marketing be in English or Nepali?

Both, matched to how your buyers type. Searches for services, education and travel are mostly English. Consumer products, local services outside the Valley and video do better in Nepali or Romanised Nepali. Write it the way a Nepali speaker would say it, never machine translated.

Which is the best digital marketing agency in Nepal?

The one that works in your own accounts, separates its fee from ad spend in writing, tracks calls and messages, and reports enquiries instead of reach. Judge any agency, including me, on dated results with baselines. A top ten list written by an agency is an advertisement.

Does digital marketing work for small businesses in Nepal?

Yes, and often better than for large ones, because a complete Google Business Profile and fast replies on WhatsApp cost nothing and most competitors skip both. The small businesses that fail online spread a small budget across four channels and track none of them.
