How to Hire an SEO Consultant in Nepal: A Buyer’s Guide for Kathmandu
Buying SEO is difficult because a polished pitch arrives before the results it promises. This guide gives you a defensible procurement process: one brief, comparable proposals, evidence you can check, safe access, and an exit that doesn't take your data with it.
Short answer: write the business problem down, give the same brief to a small shortlist, compare scope line by line, check two relevant references, and keep every account in your organisation's name. Decline guaranteed positions, undisclosed link schemes, vague deliverables and contracts that leave ownership or handover unclear.
Choose the operating model before the name
Start by deciding what you need to buy. This avoids comparing a strategic consultant with an execution team as though their proposals describe the same thing.
An agency can suit a programme that needs several disciplines and enough capacity to publish or implement at volume. Confirm whether the pitch team and delivery team are the same people rather than assuming either way.
An independent consultant can suit a defined problem needing direct senior judgement. Confirm available capacity, backup arrangements and which implementation tasks remain with your team.
A freelancer executing defined tasks suits you when you already know what needs doing and need hands rather than diagnosis.
An internal owner is required in every model. Someone in your organisation must grant access, supply subject knowledge, approve changes and judge lead quality. Outsourcing doesn't remove ownership.
Write a brief candidates can answer
A useful brief is one page. State the business objective, priority products or services, markets served, current website platform, known changes such as a redesign, internal resources, decision deadline and budget range if one exists. Give candidates read-only data after an initial confidentiality check rather than asking them to guess from the public site alone.
Ask each candidate to respond in the same structure: initial observations, proposed first phase, named deliverables, people and time allocation, client dependencies, reporting, exclusions, fee and terms. This is procurement hygiene, not bureaucracy. Without it, one quote may include implementation while another includes only recommendations, making the prices meaningless.
Twelve questions for the shortlist
- Who specifically will do this work? A name. If the answer is a team, ask who writes and who implements.
- In whose name will the accounts be created? The only acceptable answer is yours.
- What is the first decision this engagement needs to make? This reveals whether the candidate understood the objective.
- What can you responsibly infer before receiving our data? Good candidates separate public observations from conclusions requiring access.
- What does your reporting look like? It should come from Search Console and Analytics, not a rank-tracker screenshot.
- What happens in a month that goes badly? The answer reveals more than any case study.
- How do you earn or place links? Ask what is paid, what is disclosed and how the method complies with Google's policies.
- Which comparable references may I contact? Comparable means a similar problem or operating model, not necessarily the same industry.
- What isn't included? Content writing, development time and ad spend are the usual gaps.
- What do you need from me? Real SEO needs access, subject knowledge and decisions. Nobody who needs nothing is doing much.
- What is the notice period, and what do I keep? You should keep everything, because it was always in your name.
- Would you take this on if you were me? Occasionally the honest answer is no, and it's worth hearing.
Red flags that should pause procurement
- A guaranteed ranking. Google says directly that no one can guarantee a number-one ranking.
- Accounts held in the vendor's name. It gives the vendor a hold over you, and it costs you years of history when the relationship ends.
- Link packages by quantity. Ask how every placement complies with Google's link spam policy and how paid placements are qualified.
- Activity without an objective. Counts of posts, links or edited tags aren't a strategy unless the proposal explains the problem they solve.
- Unsupported precision. Exact traffic, revenue or deadline forecasts without access to your data should be treated as sales estimates, not findings.
- A proprietary secret method. There are no secrets, only execution. Secrecy usually conceals either nothing or something against guidelines.
- Reporting that never contains bad news. Every real campaign has flat months. Reports without them aren't reports.
Compare proposals, not headline prices
There is no responsible single price for SEO in Nepal because an audit, a migration and an ongoing content programme are different purchases. For sourced examples of publicly listed rates, see what digital marketing costs in Nepal. This guide focuses on making the quotes comparable.
Create a comparison sheet with the diagnostic phase, implementation, content, development, meetings, reporting, senior involvement, minimum term and taxes as separate rows. Record assumptions and exclusions beside each. Ask for clarification where a row is blank; don't silently treat blank as included.
What hiring an SEO consultant costs in Nepal
You can compare quotes only when you know which product each one describes. These are the four ways SEO is sold in Nepal, with the published ranges from October 2026.
| How it is sold | Typical price in Nepal | What you should get |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly consulting | NPR 1,500 to 5,000 an hour for senior people | Answers to specific questions, a review of a plan, a second opinion on a quote. |
| One time audit with fixes or a plan | NPR 15,000 to 50,000; mine is USD 249 | A crawl, Search Console review, a prioritised list, and either the fixes or instructions your developer can follow. |
| Project (migration, rebuild, launch) | Scoped, usually NPR 50,000 to 2,00,000 | A defined outcome with a date, a test plan and a handover. |
| Monthly retainer | NPR 15,000 to 40,000 for small business work, NPR 40,000 to 1,00,000 or more for competitive terms; mine is USD 1,800 | Named hours, content, links, monitoring and a report from your own Search Console. |
Live Nepali agency price lists start at NPR 34,000 to 40,000 a month with six month minimums and VAT on top. The full breakdown, including where the monthly fee goes, is in what SEO costs in Nepal.
What a good first month delivers
Judge the first month on these five things. If they are missing, the rest of the contract will not improve.
- Access set up in your name: Search Console, Analytics, Google Business Profile, the website, with the consultant added as a user.
- A written diagnosis that names the cause, in plain language, with the Search Console numbers behind it.
- The first fixes made or specified: indexing, speed, titles, the pages that own each search.
- A keyword map: which page owns which search, so two pages never compete.
- A baseline report you can check yourself, so month two has something to be compared against.
Run reference checks like a buyer
Ask permission to contact one or two clients whose work resembles yours. Respect legitimate confidentiality, but don't substitute an anonymous screenshot for all verification. During the call, ask what was commissioned, who actually delivered it, whether deadlines and scope were managed, how the provider handled a disappointing period, and whether access and handover were clean.
A reference can't prove that one tactic caused a result. It can tell you whether the provider communicates honestly, documents work and behaves well when the easy story disappears. Those traits are difficult to infer from a case-study page.
How to verify claims independently
Every consultant in Kathmandu claims results. A few checks cost nothing.
Audit their own website. Run it through PageSpeed Insights, look at the page source, check whether the titles are unique and whether the structured data validates. Someone selling technical SEO whose own site fails a technical audit has answered your question.
Review their public footprint. Their own site can show care and clarity, but don't turn whether they rank for one self-selected phrase into a universal skill test. Their business model may not depend on that query.
Ask for a client you can contact. Screenshots can be cropped, dated and borrowed. A conversation cannot.
Read their writing. Anyone who has done the work will have opinions about specific problems. Generic content describing what SEO is usually means generic delivery.
Contract, access and handover
The contract should name deliverables, fees, payment dates, client dependencies, confidentiality, intellectual-property ownership, use of subcontractors, notice period and what happens to unfinished work. If performance bonuses are proposed, define the data source and attribution rule before work begins.
Create Search Console, Analytics, Business Profile, tag-management and advertising access under company-controlled accounts. Add the provider with the least privilege needed and avoid sharing personal passwords. Keep a simple access register. At exit, remove users, rotate any shared credentials, transfer working files and receive a final record of changes, open issues and next steps.
Common questions
What should an SEO proposal include?
Objective, scope, deliverables, named people, dependencies, reporting, fees, exclusions, notice and ownership at exit.
How should I compare quotes?
Give everyone the same brief, then separate diagnosis, implementation, content, development, senior time and contract length.
How do I check references?
Ask who delivered, how scope and bad news were handled, whether access stayed clean and whether the client would appoint them again.
Can anyone guarantee first page rankings?
No. Google warns against it directly. A guarantee means either nothing or keywords with no demand.
Who should own my Google accounts?
You, always, with the vendor added as a user. Anyone resisting this is explaining their business model.
How much does it cost to hire an SEO consultant in Nepal?
NPR 1,500 to 5,000 an hour for senior advice, NPR 15,000 to 50,000 for a one time audit, and NPR 15,000 to 1,00,000 or more a month on retainer depending on how competitive your terms are. Live agency price lists start at NPR 34,000 to 40,000 a month. My own prices are USD 249 (about NPR 34,000) for an audit, USD 899 (about NPR 122,000) for a four week sprint and USD 1,800 a month (about NPR 245,000 a month).
Who is the best SEO expert in Nepal?
Nobody can prove that claim, so treat it as a sales line. The useful question is who has a checkable result on a problem like yours, works in accounts you own, and explains plainly what they will not do. Several Nepali consultants, including me, publish their work; read it with the questions in this guide beside you.
Should I hire a freelancer, a consultant or an agency for SEO?
A freelancer when you know what needs doing and need hands. A consultant when you need a diagnosis and one accountable person. An agency when you need content and links produced every week by several people. Most businesses in Nepal need the consultant first.
What access should I give an SEO consultant?
Read only access first: Search Console, Analytics and the ad account. Editor access to the website and Google Business Profile once you have agreed the scope. Never a login you cannot revoke, and never accounts created under their email.
How long should an SEO contract run?
Long enough to see results, which is four to six months on competitive terms, with the right to leave on thirty days notice. A six month minimum is fair with a written scope and monthly reporting; a twelve month minimum with no exit is a warning sign.
Is SEO a high income skill in Nepal?
For people who can run real accounts and show results, yes; demand for measurable SEO work exceeds the supply of people who can do it, in Nepal and from Nepal for clients abroad. Certificates alone do not pay. Running your own site and publishing what you learned does.
Use the same brief for every bidder
If I'm on your shortlist, send the written brief and comparison format. You should be able to judge my answer beside every other proposal without translating a sales call.
